New Feature: Call-in Voice Attachments

One of OnPage’s many strengths has been its inclusion of attachments to it’s critical alerts. This simple but powerful feature allows our customers to get a better understanding of a critical incident through the attachment of images and voice messages. While OnPage’s inbuilt messaging allows communication with one’s team members/colleagues through rich notifications, we wanted to take it a step further and make it easy for our customers to reach the people they need to via a voicemail-like feature. This new voicemail-like feature created by using Cisco’s Tropo technology let’s you dial in, record and send a voice message to an OnPage user as a critical alert! It is as simple as calling in and leaving someone a voice mail with the added benefit of being able to get the voice mail as a page. Turn voice messages into critical messages with a persistent alert which will not stop for […] Read more »

Serverless promises and the persistent need for critical alerting

critical alerting and serverless computing

Why serverless computing doesn’t end the need for security or alerts Serverless computing provides the advantage of taking away the problem of managing servers. For many small start-ups, this is a huge advantage as the cost of purchasing, maintaining and scaling servers is a real pain point. Serverless also holds forth the prospect of ending the need for Ops as we know it, ending the need for security worries and ending the need for being on-call. But, while this modern-day DevOps marvel known as serverless might seem like a panacea, serverless computing needs to come with a healthy dose of reality. The reality of serverless In an article I recently posted to DZone entitled How Smart Is Serverless, I question how smart it is to outsource your security concerns to a third party like AWS. As I note in the article, you cannot abstract security without facing some pretty scary consequences. Amichai […] Read more »

Seven reasons why we need pager alternatives in healthcare

devon with i suck pager

Pitch the pager or face the consequences While smartphones have become the manner of communication for most professionals, pagers are still used in many professions as the standard mode of communication. This choice for pagers comes with significant consequences and indeed many suggest the need for finding pager alternatives in healthcare. For example, pagers are not a secure method for communicating as pager messages are unencrypted. They leak information. Pager communications can also be hijacked. What is surprising is that while pagers have many significant reliability issues associated with them, many doctor and healthcare organizations continue to use them rather than seek a pager alternative. Stickiness While the overall popularity of pagers has been in decline over the past several years (see Google trends graph), pagers still maintain stickiness in the healthcare industry. In part this reason is historical as pagers have been used to alert doctors since the 1950s and […] Read more »

OnPage Critical Alerting with Microsoft Outlook

monitoring systems

Let OnPage and Microsoft Office Monitor your Network While it is well known that the Microsoft Outlook client allows you to use rules to forward emails, you might not have ever realized that you can use these rules to enable critical alerting. In fact, critical alerting with Microsoft Outlook is easily enable no matter what monitoring tools you use. Monitoring tools can send emails to your Ops team in case of an outage or security issue. Your Dev team might get an email based on an APM issue. However, rather than having the emails get buried under a mountain of ever growing messages on the email client, you could have critical messages alerting for a ‘server crash’ or ‘slow program response time’ forwarded directly to your OnPage application. Critical alerting with Microsoft Outlook and monitoring tools In our previous blog on email integration with Outlook, we showed how based on various rules […] Read more »

ChatOps – Secret to great incident management in DevOps teams of 20 or 2000

Chat your way to excellence DevOps is constantly trying to improve production through automation, collaboration and tools. ChatOps is often the paradigm which brings these tasks together into a single conversation. In ChatOps, “chat applications and tools for real-time communication and task execution [are distributed] among members of development and IT operations teams”.   Yet often times the proponents of ChatOps don’t pay sufficient attention to the incident management component part of the operation, preferring instead to look at the bots and chat room tools. However, as James Fryman noted in his talk on ChatOps: Technology and Philosophy at Geekdom San Francisco “the shared context [of chat rooms] allows everybody to see and collaborate around things that happen. This is super amazing [for] the incident management space.” Specifically, though, when high priority or critical alerts occur, notifications need to be used to broadcast the incident beyond the chat room and ensure the conversations […] Read more »

OnPage ensures compatibility with Android 7.0

nougat - android

Maintaining its customer and technology focus OnPage, the leader in incident alerting and management for IT, healthcare and IOT, released the updated version of its application to ensure compatibility with Google’s Android 7.0 N operating system. Affectionately known as Nougat, Android’s newest operating system was only around for a few weeks before the OnPage update was made. Support engineer Alex Berkson indicated that creating the update was important for ensuring that OnPage users using OS N can receive critical notifications without interruptions. The OnPage update continues to support the capabilities the app has historically demonstrated such as: Secure alerting: All messaging is encrypted Persistent messaging for up to 8 hours: Also known as alert until read, alerts will continue for up to 8 hours before expiring Split Screen on Samsung devices Real time communication: Instantaneous messaging with individuals or team members Forwarding: Send messages to your team members to bring […] Read more »

OnPage app helps prevent HIPAA violations and ransomware attacks

hospital ransomware atacks

OnPage helps thwarts HIPAA violations Avoiding HIPAA violations and combating potential ransomware attacks are top of mind for many healthcare institutions. In theory, avoiding HIPAA violations should be straight forward as HIPAA requirements are very specific in what they do and don’t allow hospitals to do during communications with their staff physicians. HIPAA legislation clearly prohibits the use of devices that do not have: user authentication data encryption remote wipe capabilities delivery and read receipts date and time stamps customized messaging retention time frames specified contact lists And yet in spite of these specific requirements meant to help ensure patient privacy, hospitals are the biggest target of ransomware attacks. According to one article, 88 percent of all ransomware attacks target hospitals. Hospitals become vulnerable to ransomware because events as basic as a lost or stolen iPhone expose strategic information. The issue is best summarized by the following paragraph in a recent article from Becker Hospital […] Read more »

What you need to know about MTTR and why IT MaTTeRs

What all engineering teams should know about MTTR In the IT world, performance is everything. So when technology fails, your first thought is how to utilize incident management knowledge to repair the situation and minimize downtime. As both a manager and an engineer, you need to minimize your MTTR –Mean Time To Resolution- in order to comply with your SLAs – service level agreements – and keep your group at the top of its game.  This article will highlight the issues impeding effective MTTR management and offer insights on how to improve use of MTTR as a metric. Who cares about MTTR I have put the importance of MTTR out there and have not defined to whom in particular the metric is important. But the truth is that just about everyone in engineering uses MTTR to measure how long it takes their teams to resolve an incident after it has […] Read more »

The secret to blameless post mortems

blameless post

How your engineering teams can move past finger-pointing to effectively managing mistakes Sidney Dekker’s theory on ‘bad apples’ holds that complex systems think they would be fine if it were not for the erratic behavior of some unreliable people. According to this theory, when unexpected events are seen in an otherwise safe system, they are typically and conveniently assigned to “human error” and when they are severe to “operator carelessness”. Similarly, post mortems often look to define and parcel out blame to engineers. Yet it begs the question of how effective the post mortems are if their only purpose is to assign blame. Instead, effective post mortems needs to “acknowledge the human tendency to blame, to allow for a productive form of its expression, and constantly refocus the postmortem’s attention past it.” Post mortems vs retrospectives The problem with post mortems begins with its name “post mortem”, which if you ask […] Read more »

OnPage uses Tropo to create bilingual office

Spanish-language phone tree facilitates after-hours at doctor’s office OnPage and Cisco Tropo Back in February of this year, OnPage announced its integration with Cisco’s Tropo technology.  Tropo’s cloud-based API platform enables OnPage to embed real-time communications within the OnPage critical alerting application through the use of voice commands.  Tropo makes it simple for OnPage’s developers to use the Cisco capabilities to create new experiences. CEO Judit Sharon knew that this was a great ‘a-ha’ moment as it would allow many unexpected and serendipitous integrations. But what Judit did not realize was quite the way in which that serendipity would unfold. What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate At the beginning of the summer, OnPage received a call from the offices of Dr. Hector Lopez in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Eric Eickhorst, the office manager at Milwaukee Family Practice, called OnPage as he was trying to find a way to help […] Read more »

Feel the burnout

Everyone on your team is feeling the pain.

Eleven practical ways for DevOps engineers to better manage their work environment At last month’s DevOpsDays Boston, many hallway sessions and Open Spaces discussions were devoted to talking about engineer burnout. At OnPage, we are focusing on this important topic through numerous formats in addition to this blog such as our e-book and video. We realize that the seriousness of the issue is highlighted in the following components: Decreased employee happiness. Employees become less satisfied and content with their work Decreased productivity. Because employees are fatigued, they are less productive Frequent job shifts. Throughout the industry, it has become standard for engineers to switch jobs every 2 to 3 years in hopes of finding employment that won’t burn them out. How to recognize burnout How do you realize that you are suffering from burnout? It’s like the famous description of a frog in boiling water. The frog only knows he’s going […] Read more »

Bringing Dev and Ops together with on-call groups

on call scheduler

Make Dev and Ops better together by building empathy with on-call groups   Create Effective Schedules Much has been written on the tension that often exists between Dev and Ops teams in an organization. All too frequently, Devs are focused on rapid prototyping and creating code while Ops are focused on keeping the ship stable and making as few changes as possible. When I was at the DevOps Boston Conference last week, much of the “hallway conference” was devoted to conversations on how to build empathy between these frenemies and make them exist in less opposition to one another. How can Dev and Ops become less siloed? How can management encourage cross pollination? One important psychological realization was that in order to create empathy between these two groups and ensure an effective group dynamic, the teams need to spend more time living in one another’s shoes. One strong and significant step that can […] Read more »

Why Pagers Suck!

hippa complaint

HIPAA Violations are only the beginning If you’re a healthcare professional you probably use pagers to communicate with your office and with others in your practice. But did you know that using a pager could cost your office $650K for a HIPAA violation? That seems like a lot of money to spend for the liberty of using a $5 device. HIPAA Requirements According to the HIPAA regulations, healthcare organizations using pagers must Ensure that all communications are encrypted Ensure that a system of message accountability is implemented Enable remote removal of messages from a pager to protect the integrity of PHI in the event of a pager being lost or stolen Enable a process for user identification on each device Enable an automatic log-out facility to prevent unauthorized access to PHI when a smartphone is left unattended Unless you have borrowed a pager from the future, your pager doesn’t meet any […] Read more »

7 Ways DevOps Can Avoid Alert Fatigue

7 ways to avoid alert fatigue

Being on-call doesn’t have to mean you’re always tired The introduction of monitoring into the DevOps world means alerts will occur 24/7 and that there will be alert fatigue in DevOps. Monitoring needs alerts in order to be effective but the issue is that while our technology is 24/7, humans cannot work in a similar fashion. Even if engineers do attempt to push at the margins and be on-call longer and later, there are considerable health, psychological and work-related effects. Even with on-call schedules, burnout is inevitable. There are also significant financial implications for companies if they have stressed, unhappy and sleep deprived engineers. For example, engineers who are feeling the stress of alert fatigue are likely to leave for greener pastures, leaving their employers without their knowledge reservoir and needing to rehire which can cost as much as 30% of the individual’s salary. Clearly, 24/7 alerts need to be […] Read more »

Critical Alerts Without a Data Package

When the Wi-Fi magical garden is gone and the message must get through Most of us don’t even think twice about internet connectivity. We get it at work or Starbucks or at home. It’s one of those low-cost goods in our society which can be produced in vast quantities as needed with minimal effort. And while $30 per month might seem pretty close to free, many consumers and business individuals outside the United States don’t live in our magical wi-fi garden. Got tech support in India? So, imagine instead that you are a company with tech support in India where nearly 900 million people do not have access to the internet. Or perhaps you have support in the Philippines which has the third lowest average connection speed in the region. Further, imagine that you have a critical alert you need to get out to your engineers about a downed server […] Read more »

Article Courtesy of:  Health IT Security The recent ransomware attack on Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center highlights the healthcare cybersecurity risks organizations face today. Unfortunately, this cyber attack also reveals the inadequacy of the HIPAA Security Rule to provide guidance on the numerous healthcare cybersecurity threats that are not associated with ePHI. The reasons why HIPAA is poorly suited for the risks posed by cyber threats fall into three categories. The first is that this regulatory approach is narrowly focused on the security of PHI and addresses only a part of the overall cyber threat. The second is that a rules-based risk management approach does not work to mitigate the full range of cyber threats and cannot help healthcare organizations increase resilience against […] Read more »

It holds the key to lowering medical costs, improving quality and making healthcare more personalized, accessible and affordable for average patients. Call it the Internet of Medicine (IoM). From a financial standpoint, the annual impact from IoM could soon exceed a trillion dollars a year — revenue, by the way, that will increasingly rely on recurring revenue arrangements. Regardless of a healthcare organization’s size, HIPAA compliance must remain a top priority. This is especially critical as technology continues to evolve and more covered entities continue to implement innovative tools such as mobile devices and HIEs. HIPAA compliance should be regularly reviewed. However, having a thorough understanding of the federal requirements for HIPAA compliance also means that healthcare organizations must understand the potential consequences of HIPAA violations. Consistent and comprehensive employee training should be paired with regular policy reviews and updates. HIPAA violations could lead to heavy regulatory fines and expose patients’ sensitive information. By regularly reviewing the basics of HIPAA compliance, covered entities and their business associates will gather a better understanding […] Read more »

So what gives? Where is this money going and why isn’t it having a measurable impact? Much of the answer can be found in organizations’ belief that data breaches are inevitable. They’ve shifted the lion’s share of their new spending into identification and cleanup, and are now neither demanding nor expecting that their investments will prevent security incidents in the first place. Particularly on vulnerable endpoints — user systems mostly — this leads to a problem of compounding complexity. More machines are suspect, more traffic is designated for analysis, and infected […] Read more »

OnPage Corporation is the Secure Messaging/Critical Alerts Leader: Learn More…   IT Security And Operations Staffs Often Work At Cross-Purposes   Article Courtesy of:  Forbes Hackers and state-sponsored cyber armies aren’t the only security threats large enterprises face today. Some of the biggest risks come from outdated and poorly synchronized internal procedures that thwart efforts to quickly defend against known threats. For example, 44% of executives in North America and Europe say security breaches occur even when vulnerabilities and their remediation have already been identified. The result: many enterprises face unnecessary risks to data loss and production downtime. One reason: while the joint efforts of security and IT operations ultimately deter- mine an enterprise’s security strength, the individual goals of these two groups are often misaligned, thanks to conflicting responsibilities and different metrics for evaluating and rewarding successful performance. The result is what industry analysts are calling a “SecOps gap,” […] Read more »

This feature overcomes the long-standing problem associated with telephone paging of not knowing the fate of a sent page.  By borrowing from its award-winning priority round-trip alerting technology, and leveraging Cisco’s voice-over-IP technology, OnPage telephone paging service now confirms via voice commands that the caller entered the correct number/USERID before sending the page. It also checks to make sure that the intended recipient is accepting pages, and informs the caller whether the message was sent or the recipient is unavailable. In March 2016, OnPage will further enhance its paging-over-telephone […] Read more »

OnPage News: Healthcare Ransomware

Are You Prepared For Healthcare Ransomware? Article Courtesy of:  Hospital EMR & EHR – Written By Anne Zieger Earlier this month, a Texas hospital was hit with a particularly loathsome virus. Leaders at Mount Pleasant, Tx.-based Titus Regional Medical Center found out on January 15 that a “ransomware” virus had encrypted files on several of the medical center’s database servers, blocking access to EMR data as well as the ability to enter data into the system. In this kind of attack, the malware author demands a financial ransom to be paid for freeing up the data. TRMC didn’t disclose how much money the attacker(s) demanded, but it may have been an immense sum, because the hospital apparently thought that bringing in pricey security consultants and enduring several days of downtime was preferable to paying up. Although, they also probably realized the slippery slope of paying the ransom and also there’s no […] Read more »

IoT - Smart Home Controls

Article Courtesy of: Computerworld Is the Government tapping into your IoT Devices & Spying on You? The U.S. spy chief admitted the government may use your “smart” internet-connected IoT devices to spy on you. A Harvard report no sooner debunked the FBI’s “Going Dark” argument than the U.S. intelligence chief admitted the government might use your “smart” internet-connected devices to spy on you. U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper testified: “Smart” IoT devices incorporated into the electric grid, vehicles—including autonomous vehicles—and household appliances are improving efficiency, energy conservation, and convenience. However, security industry analysts have demonstrated that many of these new systems can threaten data privacy, data integrity, or continuity of services. In the future, intelligence services might use the IoT for identification, surveillance, monitoring, location tracking, and targeting for recruitment, or to gain access to networks or user credentials. Clapper’s prepared testimony about spying via IoT were included in the “Worldwide Threat […] Read more »

The New 80-20 Rule for Data Center Cybersecurity Article Courtesy of:  SC Magazine – Written by: Alan S. Cohen @ Illumio . For much of the IT industry, 2014 was the year of the hack.   Reporters and analysts investigated and wrote incessantly about the seemingly hourly break-ins of corporate computer systems, culminating with the Sony incident associated with the release of “The Interview.” Undoubtedly, the cybersecurity challenge is going to result in an increasing focus and spend on security systems.   The question, however, is whether this will reduce the risk. Let’s start with the corporate data center, the Fort Knox of the enterprise, and how we guard its crown jewels.  Today, the vast bulk of security spend is on the network — firewalls, IDS/IPS, APT, monitoring, etc. — and it focuses almost exclusively on the internet perimeter. These investments account for over $10 billion in hardware/software spend alone (this […] Read more »

Five factors for evaluating big data security analytics platforms Article Courtesy of:  TechTarget Expert Dan Sullivan outlines criteria for evaluating big data security analytics platforms for collecting, analyzing and managing large volumes of data generated for information security purposes. Increasing risks of cybercrime and other malicious activity on the Internet is prompting enterprises to deploy more security controls and collect more data than ever before. As a result, advances in big data analytics are now being applied to security monitoring for broader and more in-depth analysis to protect valuable company resources. Called big data security analytics, this technology — in part — leverages the scalability of big data and combines it with advanced analytics and security event and incident management systems (SIEM). As we noted in the last article in this series, big data security analytics is appropriate for many, but not all, use cases. Consider the challenges of detecting […] Read more »

Why We’re So Vulnerable Article Courtesy of:  MIT Technology Review An expert in U.S. national cybersecurity research and policy says the next generation of technology must have data security built in from the very start. In an age of continuing electronic breaches and rising geopolitical tensions over cyber-espionage, the White House is working on a national cybersecurity strategy that’s expected in early 2016. Helping to draft that strategy is Greg Shannon. He was until recently chief scientist at Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute and is now on leave to serve as assistant director for cybersecurity strategy at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. In an interview with MIT Technology Review senior writer David Talbot, Shannon explained that dealing with today’s frequent breaches and espionage threats—which have affected federal agencies as well as businesses and individuals—requires fundamentally new approaches to creating all kinds of software. Article Courtesy of:  TechTarget Managed Service Providers are looking ahead to the new year with new service offerings as well as some that will be enhanced in 2016. Among them, they say, will be remote monitoring and management, backup/disaster recovery and business process management. “For my business, both remote monitoring [and] management and backup/disaster recovery are on my list of hot topics for 2016,” said Kenneth Goldberg, president of Microcomputer Consulting Group, based in New York City. “The advent of increased Internet speeds at affordable prices, coupled with high availability and reduced outages, will spur both of these offerings.” Although MCG already provides remote monitoring and management to the majority of its clients, “their demand for 24-hour uptime in today’s global economy puts the onus on MSPs to have round-the-clock, proactive monitoring in place to ensure we fulfill our service-level agreements,” Goldberg said. IT in the gutter with Mobile Compliance Article Courtesy of:  TechTarget The emergence of enterprise mobility has made it a lot more complicated for organizations to maintain compliance with government and industry-specific regulations. Regulatory compliance encompasses a slew of federal, state and local laws and policies that businesses must adhere to. When it comes to technology, that means obeying laws that help ensure secure data storage and processing. If a company fails to comply, it could face repercussions such as fines and even criminal charges. But the consumerization trend put another wrinkle in the way enterprises deal with compliance. Now, companies have to worry about mobile compliance and securing their data on employees’ personal smartphones and tablets — not just on corporate-provided devices. That’s tougher to secure, because IT typically has less insight into users’ own devices and apps. With company-issued laptops and desktops, IT admins could keep closer tabs […] Read more »

Cyber security: Attack of the Health Hackers Targeting Medical Records Breach of Anthem database, probably from China, is part of a 2015 wave of 100m hacked medical records.  Eight out of ten of the biggest hacks in the US last year were of healthcare providers caused by failed healthcare security. Last January an administrator at health insurer Anthem noticed an unusually complex query running on the computer network. It looked like a colleague was responsible, but a quick check revealed that it was coming from somewhere else.  Minutes later, Anthem was in crisis mode. Investigators believe the hackers were from China and had been operating undetected inside the company’s network for months. They gained access by tricking the employee to click on a phishing email that was disguised to look like an internal message. Using the administrator’s credentials, hackers combed through Anthem’s database containing names, social security numbers and birth […] Read more »

Article Courtesy of:  SPICEWORKS How the IoT is Changing Network Monitoring It’s hard to think of a name more vague than “the Internet of Things.”   The Internet is pretty hard to escape from anymore, unless you hit your roaming limit while driving through the Rockies (or your network monitoring tool misses that hub that went down) – it’s everywhere and everything, being usable from thousands of possible different interfaces. And things, well – they’re not persons or places, but that’s about as far as we can get into their specifics. What is (not) the IoT, anyway? A SpiceWorks Community thread from 2014 got to the heart of the IoT’s vagueness issue by asking what should NOT be grouped under its vast, wireless-enabled umbrella. One poster drew the line at his shaving razor, which we admit would seem to gain little or nothing from being connected to the public cloud. […] Read more »

OnPage News: Still Using Old-School Pagers?

HIPAA Compliant Secure Messaging

Article Courtesy of:  Sioux City Journal Why do doctors still use pagers?   The first pager was patented in 1949 for New York City doctors to stay in contact with the hospital. Countless “paging doctor” messages later, emergency workers are about the only people left still using beepers on a regular basis. But maybe not for long. “I foresee within two years, we won’t be carrying pagers anymore,” said Brenda Gabel, senior telecommunications technician at Mercy Medical Center Sioux City, where 650 pagers were used as recently as 2008. “We’ll be carrying smart phones instead.” These are humbling times for the trusty pager once a status symbol and safety net in an era of answering machines and pay phones. Sales plummeted as cell phones became affordable, of course, and now it’s possible to buy a pager on eBay for next to nothing. But there were holdouts, mainly first responders […] Read more »

Best Practices For HIPAA Compliance & HIPAA Privacy Article Courtesy of:  Forbes Industries such as healthcare and financial services are special targets for data breaches and cyber criminals because, as bank robber Willie Sutton said, “that’s where the money is.” Every week, we read another story about cybersecurity breaches. The growing use of social media intensifies this risk, as users consider themselves part of a “tribe” and naively click on links from their “friends” and introduce malware into the organization. Or they inadvertently share personal information about patients or clients. Cybercriminals use also personal information shared on social media to trick users into giving up passwords, hacking accounts and worse. Why Do Doctors Still Carry Pagers? Article Courtesy of: Mental Floss Seeing a pager in today’s technologically evolved world is like spotting a hand-cranked car engine. In an era where the cell phone has replaced virtually every item in an old Radio Shack catalog, what’s the point of sticking with a device that hasn’t evolved in 20-odd years? For physicians, the answer is that an anachronistic messaging system may still be best. Even though pager use has dropped from 61 million users in 1994 to less than six million today, hospital employees are helping to keep this seemingly redundant device from obsolescence for two reasons. In an urgent-care situation, they may be more reliable than cell phone reception. Second, hospitals are in no hurry to upgrade telecommunications. “The feeling has been that in hospitals where the walls are shielded due to MRIs, cells phone aren’t universal,” says Fred Pelzman, M.D., an […] Read more »

Wearables take Security Concerns to a ‘different level’ Article Courtesy of:  Fierce Mobile Healthcare Consumer fitness devices and company-sponsored wellness programs that use them pose a “whole different level of security and privacy concern,” Stephen Cobb, senior security researcher at ESET, tells “A lot of the data is fairly benign, but the architecture within which these devices operate–there are apps that talk to them, there is data that is transmitted and stored and some sort of portal though which you go and access your  information–it introduces multiple points where potentially sensitive, private information could be intercepted and stolen,” he says in the interview. Cobb says he’s not too concerned about data at rest on these devices or data shared through smartphones, but it becomes more vulnerable when it’s stored in the cloud or in a database. He cites the breach at toy maker Vetch as an example of a […] Read more »
