Why Pagers Suck!

hippa complaint

HIPAA Violations are only the beginning If you’re a healthcare professional you probably use pagers to communicate with your office and with others in your practice. But did you know that using a pager could cost your office $650K for a HIPAA violation? That seems like a lot of money to spend for the liberty of using a $5 device. HIPAA Requirements According to the HIPAA regulations, healthcare organizations using pagers must Ensure that all communications are encrypted Ensure that a system of message accountability is implemented Enable remote removal of messages from a pager to protect the integrity of PHI in the event of a pager being lost or stolen Enable a process for user identification on each device Enable an automatic log-out facility to prevent unauthorized access to PHI when a smartphone is left unattended Unless you have borrowed a pager from the future, your pager doesn’t meet any […] Read more »

50 Ways to leave your pager: Why it’s time to think pager replacement.

Why is it time to think about pager replacement? Perhaps the need for finding a pager alternative is clear to many realize the inefficency and time waste caused by using the device. These facts are highlighted in an article from 2014 entitled Why Are Hospitals Still Using Pagers?, Cliff McClintick writes “If you read the marketing copy of nearly any large hospital or health system, you’ll see references to “state-of-the art equipment” and “cutting-edge technology…. [C]onsumers have a right to expect the claim to be true. But if they or their family members experience delays in care because a doctor hasn’t returned a page, their faith may be shaken.” Moreover, the beep on a pager doesn’t rise above the constant alarms and sounds of other machines in hospitals or data centers. And often pager holders can sleep through their alarms. At OnPage, we have thought long and hard about how […] Read more »

Pager Service Disruption Worries Quebec’s Rural Communities

Emergency responder woman

Telus announced that it is canceling its pager service across Canada, effective March 31, 2015. This is cause for worry amongst some residents of Quebec’s rural communities according to CBC News. Several anglophone coastline villages near Labrador, on Quebec’s Lower North Shore, do not have cellphone service. They rely on pagers to reach health-care workers and emergency responders. Without a pager system, according to Rowsell Roberts, volunteer firefighters and health-care workers would have to wait by the phone at home. Another group recommend using two-way radios — a 1950’s technology attempting to cure 21st century urgent messaging needs. Pagers Are Obsolete Fewer and fewer people are using pagers – the devices you hold in your hand – as time goes on. The number of pagers in use has been plummeting each year since their height in the mid-1990s. Nonetheless, as of 2013, about 161,500 Canadians still had paging service subscriptions, according […] Read more »

Family Celebrates Century Of Volunteer Firefighting

“When the pagers go off, it’s like stereophonic sound.” That’s what Mom says about her family of three boys and their Dad — all volunteer firefighters. Volunteer firefighting is a tradition in this Mayer, Minnesota family. Combined, the family has served over 100 years putting out fires, protecting property, and saving lives. Rod Maetzold (Dad), is Mayer’s fire chief. The three sons — Jon, Andy, and Adam have been volunteering since they turned 18. Together, at one point, the family made up almost a third of the entire small town fire department. They sometimes joked around and called the firehouse the Maetzold Fire Department. It’s been a rewarding experience for the family, but also one that has not been easy. One evening, Andy Maetzold was dispatched to the scene of an accident. Inside the single car rollover he saw a friend. It was one of the toughest accident scenes Andy […] Read more »

Ways Mobile Technology Can Enhance Nurse Communications

Nurses: The First Practitioners of mHealth Legions of caring nurses were probably the first practitioners of mobile health (mHealth), starting in the last century — the pre-smartphone era. Nurses often carried “beepers” or what is now considered antiquated pagers. Ways Mobile Technology Can Enhance Nurse Communications Today, there are many ways mobile technology can enhance nurse communications. New mobile technologies are poised to empower nurses to both spend more time with patients and improve the quality of their care. Many believe this will make nurses more efficient, lead to lower fatigue, and result in fewer overtime hours — saving hospitals money. Mobile technologies, which include sensors, devices, and apps will make it easier for nurses to access information from wherever they are and collaborate with a patient’s care team. Accenture research found that nurses frequently use a diverse range of communication technologies. These include: bed alarms, digital signage, both mobile […] Read more »

The Central Ohio Trauma System (COTS) received numerous requests from central Ohio healthcare agencies for immediate and accurate communications about an evolving medical emergency. A water main break occurred in one of our major cities, affecting one of our hospital systems causing the shut down of  the entire water supply to the hospital,” recalled Kelsey Blackburn, Critical Incident Response Planner for COTS. “At that point, the main issue was not that they didn’t have power – because they […] Read more »

There’s been a lot of hype about the Internet of Things – but what exactly is the “Internet of Things”, and how will the use and access of critical data affect your life?   The Internet of Things is simply the interconnection of computing devices that are connected to one another and to the Internet. With applications ranging from consumer to consumer, business to business, and government to industries. The abbreviation for it looks like this — IoT.So, what type of devices and applications are we referring to here? Well, hi-tech ones that you might find in a health care setting such as a heart monitoring implant, internet-linked billboards, waste management systems to monitor those who exceed waste limits, smart water systems and meters, wearable devices such as wristwatches that not only monitor time and manage texts and emails, but they also monitor the blood sugar in a person’s system. Pager Inefficiencies | OnPage Pager Replacement

Hand Held Pager

The OnPage Pager Replacement is the Answer to poor Hospital Communications. According to a recent study by Dr. Larry Ponemon, of the Ponemon Institute, “…the efficient communication and collaboration among physicians, nurses and other providers is critical to the coordination and delivery of patient care, especially given the increasingly mobile nature of today’s clinicians…” The health care industry continues to rely, for the most part, on Pagers — an antiquated technology. Pagers create inefficiencies that have a significant economic and productivity impact on the health care industry — costing billions. Dr. Ponemon details these inefficiencie in his “Report on the Economic Impact of Inefficient Communications in Healthcare”. These are the four main points : The average care provider wastes more than 45 minutes per day by using outdated communication technologies – that’s almost 6 hours a week. 65% of the time it takes to admit a patient is wasted due […] Read more »

Remembering Pagers or “How to Say I Love You in Three 3’s”

Priority Messaging Healthcare - OnPage - Smartphone Pager Replacement

When Pagers Were King. A couple of decades ago, in its heyday, pagers were unquestionably “The Next Big Thing” – a sleek, hi-tech, futuristic communication device. If you really needed to get in touch – send a page! The buzzing-vibrating sound was sure to get the attention of whoever you sent the page, and they would certainly respond. We’ll, that was the idea, but it really didn’t play out that way. Here’s why: First: You really never knew if they got the page, which is kind of a drag if the page was important. Back then, in the Pager Age (P.A.), there was no such thing as message receipt, message read conformation, or an audit trail. Second: Response time was, by today’s standard, LONG!  But, people really didn’t expect immediacy back then. Of course, that wasn’t really a problem. You could always ask them if they got the page tomorrow –  if […] Read more »

Secured Texting is NOT Acceptable for Pager Replacement

Due to the new HIPAA compliance guidelines that came out in September, more organizations rush to get compliant messaging solutions such as secure SMS. However, there are many reasons why secured texting is NOT acceptable for healthcare communication and is NOT a suitable replacement for pagers. 1) Secured Texting does NOT enable messages to be sent through multiple platforms; messages can only be sent through the application 2) Secured Texting does NOT provide persistent alerts until the message is acknowledged; it will only alert you once. 3) Secured Texting does NOT offer a repeated delivery until your device is operational 4) Secured Texting does NOT have a time stamped audit trial for ALL messages 5) Secured Texting does NOT allow for group or escalation group messages. 6) Secured Texting IS NOT fully HIPAA compliant. It does not archive messages. If you are using secured texting as your messaging solution, you […] Read more »

Privacy & Security Breaches

In the healthcare industry, a patient’s privacy and security are held to the highest standard. Healthcare professionals and organizations must adhere to many rules & guidelines including the HIPAA Security Role, HITECH act and the Joint Commission.  Breaching these deep regulations can result in expensive fines and lack of patient confidentiality. Nevertheless, these breaches do occur more frequently than to be expected. One way these occur is due to nosy employees. In October of this year, Allina Health system in Minnesota notified more than 3,800 patients that one of its medical assistants had accessed their PHI improperly for more than three years. In this time frame she had accessed, patient’s names, DOB’s, clinical data, health insurance information and partial Social Security Numbers. They were able to seek out who was responsible for these breaches by following the audit trail of that patient’s record. Another way in which privacy & security breaches occur is due […] Read more »

Email & SMS: NOT Good Enough For IT Monitoring

Are you an IT Administrator staring at your phone’s screen all day waiting for an email or text?  Have you ever missed a CRITICAL email or text because it didn’t grab your attention? Using email and SMS for network alerts has been a widely used practice since the early 90’s, but is not an effective and efficient way of receiving these kinds of CRITICAL alerts.  Alert notifications are a crucial part of your system monitoring. Missing even one single email or text can result in downtime which can also result in revenue loss, reputation damage, and potential customer defections. System monitoring without a noticeable alert is like getting a Pizza delivered to your building but not knowing when, so unless you sit there by the lobby waiting for that Pizza, by the time you find the Pizza it’s stale and cold. Thoughts From The CEO: Efficiency, Accountability & Reliability

This past weekend I attended the Fraunhofer awards ceremony for the prestigious 2013 Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize for Science and Innovation in Hannover, Germany. The Prizes were given to four technology groups from different institutes around the world, working in different fields but with the same theme: developing new technologies that enhance Efficiency. As a spectator listening to the different group presentations (with a translator), it became very clear to me that indeed Efficiency is the word of the future! Efficiency is the goal! I recalled a conversation I had the prior week with the CIO of a large healthcare plan in Boston to whom I introduced our OnPage solution for Pager replacement on Smartphones. He said that based on their budget for 2014, they may need to cut some people, but still carry the same load.  Essentially be more efficient! Here was a pocket-sized device that went everywhere, and could ensure people received urgent messages no matter where they were. It took 25 years to catch on—and boy, did it ever. The first commercially successful pager, the Motorola Pageboy, was marketed in 1974. The pager (which people took to calling a “beeper”) might well be the first truly mobile communication device to catch on, with over 61 million pagers in use by 1994. Then along came the cell phone and, later, the smartphone. Today, we have a zillion ways to send urgent messages, but only one way to ensure those messages are received and read. Think about it. We have email, texting, chat rooms, instant messaging, SMS, MMS, Skype, iChat … the list is long. Yet those messaging systems can’t be relied upon […] Read more »

Email Alerts for Network Monitoring – Is Email Enough?

Virus Alert

Using Email and SMS alerts for network monitoring such as Nagios, Zabbix or Solarwinds has been the practice since the early 90’s. But in an era of Smartphone in which we get thousands of email messages,  IT experts ask themselves: “Is email still the right alert medium? Would I now stare at my inbox, each time I get an email, waiting for that critical email? Is SMS the right alert? Will it draw my attention?” Alerting is a crucial part of your system monitoring. A system monitoring without a conspicuous alert when something is amiss is like getting a Pizza delivered to your building but not knowing when, so unless you sit there by the lobby waiting for that Pizza, by the time you find the Pizza it’s stale and cold. OnPage, a virtual pager app for your iPhone , BlackBerry, and Android smartphones.  OnPage cuts through the clutter on your smartphone to deliver those critical alerts immediately. You can set […] Read more »

Local Hospitals & Public Safety Feeling the Squeeze of FCC Narrow Banding Mandate

On January 1, 2013, all paging equipment (including pagers, transmitters etc) must move to a 12.5 KHz narrowband channel or to a technology that achieves equivalent efficiency.   Talk is Cheap The FCC has been talking about Narrow Banding for quite a while, since 1995 in fact, when the first narrow banding rules were adopted.  In 2004 the FCC announced the deadline of January 1, 2013 as the drop dead date for all Public Safety and Industrial/Business licensees to move their communications from the 25 kHz (wideband) radio frequency to the 12.5 kHz (narrowband) channel bandwidth or a technology that achieves equivalent efficiency. With the January 1, 2013 deadline fast approaching many organizations are in a tail spin over finding funds and/or new technology to comply with the Mandate, especially those who chose to delay system updates.  Public Safety, businesses, and hospitals are especially feeling the pressure. Many are scrambling […] Read more »

Why is Pager Coverage Vanishing in the State of Illinois?

It’s a small pager world and it keeps getting smaller. Recently, the Illinois Department of Central Management Services BCCS (Bureau of Communication and Computer Services) in their Telecommunications Bulletin, announced the decommissioning of telecommunication towers which provided pager services for six of their local cities and towns.  The Bulletin also reported that another four cities may also be out of service in coming months. This news follows two previous pager service discontinuation bulletins in August Bulletin and October Bulletin of last year for yet two other Illinois cities. The trend is serious news for the state, which anticipates the decommissioning trend to continue. So what is causing the paging service providers to terminate such critical messaging coverage to area cities?  The answer may just come down to dollars and cents. It’s no secret that the traditional paging industry is currently facing some serious challenges. The original telephone based pager […] Read more »

The Federal SERVE Act Could Rescue Volunteer Fire Fighters and Other First Responders

First Responders

Thousands of volunteers Firefighters and other first responders may finally be getting compensation for their selfless and heroic efforts. On July 11, 2011 New York Congressman Maurice Hinchey introduced the Supporting Emergency Responders Volunteer Efforts (SERVE) Act. According to New York’s WBNG News, “The SERVE Act would provide volunteer firefighters and emergency service personnel with a $1,000 annual tax credit. The brave volunteers who risk their own lives to save the lives of others deserve our support. In short, the SERVE Act says thank you.” Volunteers often incur personal expenses in order to be a part of their community’s first responder teams. It’s not uncommon that they pay for their own pager service and pager hardware to be ‘on call’ when disaster strikes.  As Fire Chief Bob Franklin of Arkansas Northeast Saline County Volunteer Fire and Rescue told Today’s KTHV “They are there in a minute’s notice. Everyone wears […] Read more »

Pitch Your Pager Device for a Smartphone

Pitch Your Pager

Do you still use a pager? If you answered yes, you’re not alone.  Many hospital, healthcare and emergency response workers still own and use pagers as part of their daily operations. Pagers widespread but falling out of favor Hospitals routinely use pagers to alert physicians, respiratory therapists, and other important staff regarding when and where they’re needed in the hospital. Firefighters too, especially volunteer staff, regularly employ pagers to receive priority messages so they can respond to calls in their local communities. Although still widespread, not every one is happy about still having to use pagers. Many users often cite serious concerns such as limited functionality, poor coverage, aging infrastructure and a dwindling number of options when it comes to pager service providers.  They feel trapped into using obsolete pager technology when their own personal devices offer far superior service. Smartphones begin replacing pagers The need for priority messaging […] Read more »

Paging Customer Service. Hello? Hello?

Hand Held Pager

It’s tough being a pager customer today. Once admired by those around them as well-connected leaders of instant communication, pager users now experience reduced or inadequate pager coverage, suffer the frustration of poor customer service, and must endure the harsh jokes about dated technology. Although we can’t do anything about the bad jokes, we can address the issues of reliable coverage, responsible customer service, and new pager technology. Let’s start by admitting one key fact that most pager companies have forgotten. Priority messaging is as critical to business today as it was 20 years ago. Sure the tools are changing but priority messaging remains a critical part of many businesses and organizations. Pager Coverage Pager customers consider coverage a big, and I do mean huge concern. It’s a main reason they have a pager in the first place. They rely on being accessible and run the risk of losing customers […] Read more »

OnPage™ Adds Redundancy and Reliability to Our Own Private Cloud

Cloud Computing

We’ve been hearing a lot about ‘the cloud’ lately. Maybe you have too. It’s a new way of harnessing the power and scalability of large computing resources and it is becoming a more integrated and efficient way of ensuring highly dependable, redundant, and secure software as a service (SAAS) performance. Steve Jobs at Apple’s recent WWDC2011 talked a lot about his cloud; how it will make everyone’s life easier because “it just works”.  As an SAAS smartphone priority messaging and pager application, we agree. We’re all about ‘making it work’ for our customers. That’s why having a private, secure cloud architecture has been part of our plan from the start. The exciting news is that the scheduled completion of our private, secure, and redundant cloud computing infrastructure is finally here.  On June 19th and again on 29th, our technical team was busy upgrading, testing, and enhancing our software, […] Read more »
