The Secret to Making Your DevOps Team World Class

Continuous deployment is key to world class DevOps With their State of DevOps report released at the beginning of the summer, Puppet clearly defined the characteristics of world class DevOps organizations and the make-up of those lagging behind. According to Nigel Kersten, CIO of Puppet, there is a huge gap between organizations that get DevOps and are able to ship software on demand and “organizations that take days, weeks or even years to ship simple upgrades … and the gap is widening”. Where is your company on the spectrum? Is your company deploying 80 times per day like Etsy or thousands of times per day like Amazon? Is your company one of those that spends 50% less time remediating security issues than low performers, and 22% less time on unplanned work? How much time does your team have for building new code? Perhaps you don’t even know the exact answer […] Read more »

MTTR by the Numbers

Ignoring MTTR can cost you millions   Peter Drucker was famous for saying that “If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it.” That’s why knowing your MTTR (mean time to resolution) is so important. If you don’t know how long it takes for you to fix issues, you cannot improve on that time. Effectively, MTTR is an important shorthand for your team to know how well they are doing in acknowledging and responding to software, hardware or deployment failures. Here are 3 key ways your team can improve their MTTR: Identifying the root cause is usually the biggest cause of MTTR variability and the one that has the highest cost associated with it. Ensure that information goes to the right person.  When a monitoring system detects an issue and sends an email, use OnPage to make sure that the correct engineer is alerted. Have escalations enabled so that engineers can […] Read more »

Feel the burnout

Eleven practical ways for DevOps engineers to better manage their work environment At last month’s DevOpsDays Boston, many hallway sessions and Open Spaces discussions were devoted to talking about engineer burnout. The artifacts of engineer burnout are many but the main ones identified by the conference attendees were: Decreased employee happiness. Employees become less satisfied and content with their work Decreased productivity. Because employees are fatigued, they are less productive Frequent job shifts. Throughout the industry, it has become standard for engineers to switch jobs every 2 to 3 years in hopes of finding employment that won’t burn them out. How to recognize burnout How do you realize that you are suffering from burnout? It’s like the famous description of a frog in boiling water. The frog only knows he’s going to die when it’s too late. Similarly, the engineer only knows they are suffering burnout when they have either […] Read more »

Cygnus Decreases Costs and Improves Response Time

OnPage facilitates Cygnus’ growth of 25% per year through efficiency, cost reduction and improved response to critical alerts OnPage, a leading provider of incident management technology, has helped Cygnus Systems Inc., reduce the time it takes to respond to critical alerts. In a case study released today, OnPage details how through Cygnus System’s integration of OnPage’s technology and ConnectWise, Cygnus has been able to spend less on its answering service, reduce waiting time for its customers and improve the quality of response by its engineers. The sum of these efforts has allowed the company to grow by 25% over the past year. Slashing response time to critical alerts and getting IT to work as quickly as possible to resolve incidents was key for Cygnus. Inefficient issue resolution, limited visibility of issues and fragmented communications can plague MSPs if not handled efficiently and quickly. 50 Ways to leave your pager: Why it’s time to think pager replacement.

Why is it time to think about pager replacement? Perhaps the need for finding a pager alternative is clear to many realize the inefficency and time waste caused by using the device. These facts are highlighted in an article from 2014 entitled Why Are Hospitals Still Using Pagers?, Cliff McClintick writes “If you read the marketing copy of nearly any large hospital or health system, you’ll see references to “state-of-the art equipment” and “cutting-edge technology…. [C]onsumers have a right to expect the claim to be true. But if they or their family members experience delays in care because a doctor hasn’t returned a page, their faith may be shaken.” Moreover, the beep on a pager doesn’t rise above the constant alarms and sounds of other machines in hospitals or data centers. And often pager holders can sleep through their alarms. At OnPage, we have thought long and hard about how […] Read more »

Boston Marathon 2015

Boston-Marathon_5

Reporting:  Sam Sharon for Onset Technology Thankfully, the 2015 B.A.A Boston Marathon went smoothly. Supporters lined the entirety of 26.2-mile course, from Hopkinton to the Prudential Center. At the finish line, banks gave spectators free popcorn and cowbells; and on Heartbreak Hill, retail stores set up food buffets and giveaway stations. True to the New England spirit, even the weather didn’t stop the celebrations. And all across Massachusetts, the echo of “Boston Strong” could be heard.   But now, with the Tsarnaev trial coming to a close on the heels of this year’s Marathon, memories of the 2013 Boston bombings begin to resurface. Unlike before, the whole racecourse was now dotted with Boston Police officers, sheriffs, and even K-9 units on every block. There were over twenty security checkpoints throughout the course, and only clear plastic bags, and purses smaller than twelve inches, were allowed through without a thorough search. The Copley […] Read more »

What to Expect: Health Care & The Internet Of Things – IoT

OnPage - Internet of Things

Health Care & the Internet of Things – IoT. What’s next? Many believe that the “Internet or Things” or IoT is just on the cusp of exploding in our homes – garage-door openers that open when your car is nearby, refrigerators that use the Internet to place an order when the milk gets low, heating systems that turn on from our smartphone, etc. But what about healthcare & the Internet of Things? Will we soon be seeing “smart” beds that react to patients needs and free up nurses to take care of more urgent needs? Will your runaway glucose level be reported to your doctor’s smartphone via a secure messaging alert? Or maybe it’s something else we haven’t even imagined yet? Predicting the health care technology future, even 3-5 years down the road, is a difficult task. Dr. Carl Sagan,  once said, “Prognosticating about the future is lost art.” Perhaps 150 years ago […] Read more »

Internet of Things – Separating the Critical Data

Internet of Things

There’s been a lot of hype about the Internet of Things – but what exactly is the “Internet of Things”, and how will the use and access of critical data affect your life?   The Internet of Things is simply the interconnection of computing devices that are connected to one another and to the Internet. With applications ranging from consumer to consumer, business to business, and government to industries. The abbreviation for it looks like this — IoT.So, what type of devices and applications are we referring to here? Well, hi-tech ones that you might find in a health care setting such as a heart monitoring implant, internet-linked billboards, waste management systems to monitor those who exceed waste limits, smart water systems and meters, wearable devices such as wristwatches that not only monitor time and manage texts and emails, but they also monitor the blood sugar in a person’s system. Remembering Pagers or “How to Say I Love You in Three 3’s”

Priority Messaging Healthcare - OnPage - Smartphone Pager Replacement

When Pagers Were King. A couple of decades ago, in its heyday, pagers were unquestionably “The Next Big Thing” – a sleek, hi-tech, futuristic communication device. If you really needed to get in touch – send a page! The buzzing-vibrating sound was sure to get the attention of whoever you sent the page, and they would certainly respond. We’ll, that was the idea, but it really didn’t play out that way. Here’s why: First: You really never knew if they got the page, which is kind of a drag if the page was important. Back then, in the Pager Age (P.A.), there was no such thing as message receipt, message read conformation, or an audit trail. Second: Response time was, by today’s standard, LONG!  But, people really didn’t expect immediacy back then. Of course, that wasn’t really a problem. You could always ask them if they got the page tomorrow –  if […] Read more »

Email & SMS: NOT Good Enough For IT Monitoring

networkmonitoring

Are you an IT Administrator staring at your phone’s screen all day waiting for an email or text?  Have you ever missed a CRITICAL email or text because it didn’t grab your attention? Using email and SMS for network alerts has been a widely used practice since the early 90’s, but is not an effective and efficient way of receiving these kinds of CRITICAL alerts.  Alert notifications are a crucial part of your system monitoring. Missing even one single email or text can result in downtime which can also result in revenue loss, reputation damage, and potential customer defections. System monitoring without a noticeable alert is like getting a Pizza delivered to your building but not knowing when, so unless you sit there by the lobby waiting for that Pizza, by the time you find the Pizza it’s stale and cold. OnPage Pager Application Celebrates 2nd Birthday!

Hard to believe, we are already two years in the market!! The OnPage pager application for Android, iPhone and Blackberry was the FIRST in the market to offer hosted Paging service on Smartphones.  Not the traditional paging service capabilities on Android, iPhone and Blackberry but smart paging that ensures efficiency, accountability and reliability. For most individuals, Paging is an 80’s term. Most will say “I used to carry a pager 20 year ago…” or “Who still needs a Pager these days?” But the answer is simple: Paging is a term used to describe urgency, priority messaging which we all still need, and thus it should not be associated with the actual pager device of yesteryear.  Today’s paging allows you to be informed as to the message status, allows you to reply to a page and even initiate a page to another OnPage user, all at your fingertips on your smartphone. Thoughts From The CEO: Efficiency, Accountability & Reliability

judit

This past weekend I attended the Fraunhofer awards ceremony for the prestigious 2013 Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize for Science and Innovation in Hannover, Germany. The Prizes were given to four technology groups from different institutes around the world, working in different fields but with the same theme: developing new technologies that enhance Efficiency. As a spectator listening to the different group presentations (with a translator), it became very clear to me that indeed Efficiency is the word of the future! Efficiency is the goal! I recalled a conversation I had the prior week with the CIO of a large healthcare plan in Boston to whom I introduced our OnPage solution for Pager replacement on Smartphones. He said that based on their budget for 2014, they may need to cut some people, but still carry the same load.  Essentially be more efficient! Being efficient is facilitated by the use of new […] Read more »

Hospitals Losing BILLIONS over Outdated Pager Technology!

Hospitals that can make the switch to a more updated technology like OnPage Priority Messaging- a pager replacement application that combines the functionality of a pager but with the power and convenience of a smartphone. Does Your Messaging Solution Archive Messages for HIPAA Compliance?

HIPAA Wording
