OnPage secure messaging

OnPage is known for it’s alerting capabilities.  A majority of our customers who are MSPs (managed service providers) for example, use OnPage to shoot out distinct alerts. They do this by setting up monitoring tools at their client’s end and this picks up abnormalities. OnPage, in this case, offers alert automation, but that’s not all we are known for. OnPage has secure messaging built into our application  which allows ease of communication between teams and individuals. In this blog we will walk you through OnPage IDs, how to sync contacts and sending a message.  OnPage IDs OnPage messaging works with OnPage IDs that are usually in this format <OnPageID>@onpage.com (if your OnPage ID is “test1” for example then your complete OnPage ID will be [email protected]). As long as you know the ID of the user you can send them a message. If you have the OnPage IDs of the people you […] Read more »

Pager Service Disruption Worries Quebec’s Rural Communities

Emergency responder woman

Telus announced that it is canceling its pager service across Canada, effective March 31, 2015. This is cause for worry amongst some residents of Quebec’s rural communities according to CBC News. Several anglophone coastline villages near Labrador, on Quebec’s Lower North Shore, do not have cellphone service. They rely on pagers to reach health-care workers and emergency responders. Without a pager system, according to Rowsell Roberts, volunteer firefighters and health-care workers would have to wait by the phone at home. Another group recommend using two-way radios — a 1950’s technology attempting to cure 21st century urgent messaging needs. Pagers Are Obsolete Fewer and fewer people are using pagers – the devices you hold in your hand – as time goes on. The number of pagers in use has been plummeting each year since their height in the mid-1990s. Nonetheless, as of 2013, about 161,500 Canadians still had paging service subscriptions, according […] Read more »

Can Smartphones Can Help You Eat Better?

healthy foods

A smartphone is great for calculating your net worth, listening to music, and taking photos. But did you know that a smartphone is also great for helping you eat better? Well, that’s what 82 percent of respondents believe, according to a recent survey. That stat comes from food ethnographer June Jo Lee, who specializes in cultural analysis, and who also recently conducted a survey at a whole grains food conference in Boston. Smartphones have the ability to help increase food literacy – just by doing a Siri or Google search. Many social researchers believe it is also influencing not only what millennials think, but what they eat. The real question is, do they end up eating better and healthier or do they just think they are eating better and healthier. It’s hard to know for sure — because the data is all self-reported. One thing, however, is clear — access to […] Read more »

How Smartphones and Digital Screens Transform Minds

Baby reading a tablet

Are You Hard-Wired? Neuroscientists warn that people who use smartphones and digital devices for reading seem to be developing “digital brains”. These online readers are developing new circuits designed for skimming through a flood of information online and skipping around through hyperlinked pages. This new alternative way of reading appears to be at odds with the traditional linear print reading circuitry developed over the past several thousands of years — from the birth of Egyptian hieroglyphics to the emergence of the Gutenberg press. Many believe that online reading is not only transforming how we read, but our minds as well. Online readers skim, pick out key words, and organizing their eye movements to generate the most information at the highest speed. And, they do this at a rate too fast to ingest real meaning. The question is, “Are we developing Twitter brains?” If cable TV news gave the world the sound […] Read more »

Ways Mobile Technology Can Enhance Nurse Communications

NURSE

Nurses: The First Practitioners of mHealth Legions of caring nurses were probably the first practitioners of mobile health (mHealth), starting in the last century — the pre-smartphone era. Nurses often carried “beepers” or what is now considered antiquated pagers. Ways Mobile Technology Can Enhance Nurse Communications Today, there are many ways mobile technology can enhance nurse communications. New mobile technologies are poised to empower nurses to both spend more time with patients and improve the quality of their care. Many believe this will make nurses more efficient, lead to lower fatigue, and result in fewer overtime hours — saving hospitals money. Mobile technologies, which include sensors, devices, and apps will make it easier for nurses to access information from wherever they are and collaborate with a patient’s care team. Accenture research found that nurses frequently use a diverse range of communication technologies. These include: bed alarms, digital signage, both mobile […] Read more »

Remembering Pagers or “How to Say I Love You in Three 3’s”

Priority Messaging Healthcare - OnPage - Smartphone Pager Replacement

When Pagers Were King. A couple of decades ago, in its heyday, pagers were unquestionably “The Next Big Thing” – a sleek, hi-tech, futuristic communication device. If you really needed to get in touch – send a page! The buzzing-vibrating sound was sure to get the attention of whoever you sent the page, and they would certainly respond. We’ll, that was the idea, but it really didn’t play out that way. Here’s why: First: You really never knew if they got the page, which is kind of a drag if the page was important. Back then, in the Pager Age (P.A.), there was no such thing as message receipt, message read conformation, or an audit trail. Second: Response time was, by today’s standard, LONG!  But, people really didn’t expect immediacy back then. Of course, that wasn’t really a problem. You could always ask them if they got the page tomorrow –  if […] Read more »

stackedmoney

A recent study done by Ponemon Institute & Emerson Network Power shows that healthcare organizations face an average cost of $690,000 per outage incident. This comes as a 41 percent increase since 2010. The study also shows that larger groups with more extensive IT systems could pay our nearly as much as $1.74 million per incident. These costs come at a hefty price, but server downtime for the healthcare industry can be detrimental to daily operations. The healthcare industry is very dependent on data for all aspects of care including clinical metrics, patient care, and billing and reporting. The fines associated with each incident do depend on a number of factors such as length of data downtime and complexity of downtime.  “This increase in cost underscores the importance for organizations to make it a priority to minimize the risk of downtime that can potentially cost thousands of dollars per minute,” said […] Read more »

Privacy & Security Breaches

In the healthcare industry, a patient’s privacy and security are held to the highest standard. Healthcare professionals and organizations must adhere to many rules & guidelines including the HIPAA Security Role, HITECH act and the Joint Commission.  Breaching these deep regulations can result in expensive fines and lack of patient confidentiality. Nevertheless, these breaches do occur more frequently than to be expected. One way these occur is due to nosy employees. In October of this year, Allina Health system in Minnesota notified more than 3,800 patients that one of its medical assistants had accessed their PHI improperly for more than three years. In this time frame she had accessed, patient’s names, DOB’s, clinical data, health insurance information and partial Social Security Numbers. They were able to seek out who was responsible for these breaches by following the audit trail of that patient’s record. Another way in which privacy & security breaches occur is due […] Read more »

Thoughts From The CEO: Efficiency, Accountability & Reliability

This past weekend I attended the Fraunhofer awards ceremony for the prestigious 2013 Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize for Science and Innovation in Hannover, Germany. The Prizes were given to four technology groups from different institutes around the world, working in different fields but with the same theme: developing new technologies that enhance Efficiency. As a spectator listening to the different group presentations (with a translator), it became very clear to me that indeed Efficiency is the word of the future! Efficiency is the goal! I recalled a conversation I had the prior week with the CIO of a large healthcare plan in Boston to whom I introduced our OnPage solution for Pager replacement on Smartphones. He said that based on their budget for 2014, they may need to cut some people, but still carry the same load.  Essentially be more efficient! Being efficient is facilitated by the use of new […] Read more »

Does Your Messaging Solution Archive Messages for HIPAA Compliance?

HIPAA Wording

Did you know that to be in complete HIPAA compliance you must adhere to the six year document retention requirement for information related to PHI (protected health information) specified within HIPAA? You may have thought that to be in compliance with HIPAA you only needed a messaging system with secure end to end encryption. This statement is not true. To be in complete HIPAA compliance you need to adhere to their archiving requirements and keep information related to PHI on record for at least six years. Messaging solutions on the market today that claim to be HIPAA compliant do not adhere to this archiving requirement. Secure SMS text for example does not adhere to this requirement as there is no way to store or audit past information, whether the message was sent encrypted or not.
