Pager Inefficiencies | OnPage Pager Replacement

Hand Held Pager

The OnPage Pager Replacement is the Answer to poor Hospital Communications. According to a recent study by Dr. Larry Ponemon, of the Ponemon Institute, “…the efficient communication and collaboration among physicians, nurses and other providers is critical to the coordination and delivery of patient care, especially given the increasingly mobile nature of today’s clinicians…” The health care industry continues to rely, for the most part, on Pagers — an antiquated technology. Pagers create inefficiencies that have a significant economic and productivity impact on the health care industry — costing billions. Dr. Ponemon details these inefficiencie in his “Report on the Economic Impact of Inefficient Communications in Healthcare”. These are the four main points : The average care provider wastes more than 45 minutes per day by using outdated communication technologies – that’s almost 6 hours a week. 65% of the time it takes to admit a patient is wasted due […] Read more »

Email & SMS: NOT Good Enough For IT Monitoring

networkmonitoring

Are you an IT Administrator staring at your phone’s screen all day waiting for an email or text?  Have you ever missed a CRITICAL email or text because it didn’t grab your attention? Using email and SMS for network alerts has been a widely used practice since the early 90’s, but is not an effective and efficient way of receiving these kinds of CRITICAL alerts.  Alert notifications are a crucial part of your system monitoring. Missing even one single email or text can result in downtime which can also result in revenue loss, reputation damage, and potential customer defections. System monitoring without a noticeable alert is like getting a Pizza delivered to your building but not knowing when, so unless you sit there by the lobby waiting for that Pizza, by the time you find the Pizza it’s stale and cold. OnPage helps to eliminate this process so that you can receive your […] Read more »

The Prizes were given to four technology groups from different institutes around the world, working in different fields but with the same theme: developing new technologies that enhance Efficiency. As a spectator listening to the different group presentations (with a translator), it became very clear to me that indeed Efficiency is the word of the future! Efficiency is the goal! I recalled a conversation I had the prior week with the CIO of a large healthcare plan in Boston to whom I introduced our OnPage solution for Pager replacement on Smartphones. He said that based on their budget for 2014, they may need to cut some people, but still carry the same load.  Essentially be more efficient! KLAS Study Shows Healthcare Concerns over BYOD

byod

A recent study completed by KLAS Research shows that health care providers are concerned about security and safety in the ever increasing BYOD mobile healthcare environment. KLAS surveyed 105 CIOs, IT specialists, and physicians to complete their study. They found that 70 percent of physicians use mobile devices to access sensitive information including electronic health records. 3phones

According to the new Cybercitizen Health® U.S. 2012 by Manhattan Research, mobile and tablet health activity are continuing to grow. More than 75 million adults in the US are currently using their mobile phones or tablets to gain information on health related issues, which is up from 61 million as of last year. “Growing ownership of connected devices and the access to digital health tools and information they provide is helping to drive the broader shift from intermittent to continuous care,” Monique Levy, Vice President of Research at Manhattan Research, stated. “This trend shows vast potential for changing key dynamics of healthcare delivery, including patient engagement, provider involvement, and how preventive care is incentivized.” As Levy stated above, it is important for both physicians and patients alike to notice the enormous growing trend for mobile health tools. These tools could change the dynamics of communication and engagement between health providers […] Read more »

Physician Shortage Leads to Longer Wait Time for Patients

shortage of drs

If you had the chance to read OnPage’s previous post “Doctors speak up for Digital Communications” then you understand how overworked doctors are feeling with paperwork, patient visits, and follow ups. Well recently it has also been announced that there is a growing shortage of physicians in some specialties which could result in even longer wait times and delays in receiving medical care. A major reason our doctors are outnumbered by patients is because of the increasing age of the baby boomers. With the baby boomers starting to enter into retirement the demand for specialty physicians that typically treat elders is increasing rapidly and there simply is not enough time for physicians to see all of their patients. One area that is really feeling the loss of physicians is cardiology. According to the American Heart Association, as of 2009, there was a shortage of about 1,700 general cardiologists in the […] Read more »

According to a survey by healthcare agency Publicis Touchpoint, doctors want efficient methods of communication that will allow them to spend more time with patients. Publicis surveyed 250 physicians from the Sermo database and found that in their daily work, 88% carry smart phones and 54% use iPads or other tablets. Why SMS is NOT Suitable For Doctors

SMS

Text messaging over the last decade has become a mainstream form of communication, but does that mean that it is appropriate to be used among doctors? The critical messages sent among doctors are different than communications in any other industry. They often contain private and time sensitive information regarding patients; therefore, doctors are required to be in accordance with HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Text messaging is NOT HIPAA compliant and therefore texting and doctors simply do not mix. Failure to comply with HIPAA could result in fines of up to $250,000 or ten years in jail. OnPage provides a simple priority messaging solution that fully complies with HIPAA standards to ensure your messages are encrypted, immediate, and auditable. Why SMS does NOT Adhere to Patient Safety:  1.Text messaging is NOT encrypted 2.Text messaging cannot show full audit trails of when the messages are received and read 3.Text messaging cannot ensure priority delivery; a message about a […] Read more »

Text Messaging for Physicians Deemed “Unacceptable” by JCAHO

Text Messaging is not HIPAA Compliant

Since the early 2000s, text messaging has been a mainstream communication.  Primarily used for its ease of convenience and efficiency, text messaging has branched out from being a personal form of communication to an enterprise wide form of communication.  Lately for businesses, the use of text messaging has come under scrutiny due to policies and regulations that it does not adhere to. The healthcare industry is currently aware of this scrutiny as it has been brought up by JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.) JCAHO recently weighed in on the issue of physician and licensed independent practitioners using text messages to transmit orders for patients, hospitals or any other healthcare setting.  JCAHO stated that the use of text messaging in healthcare environments is unacceptable due to its violations of the HIPAA Security and Privacy regulations that every healthcare professional is expected to adhere to. These strict HIPAA guidelines include […] Read more »

Earthquakes, Hurricanes and Onset Technology

National disasters can strike with our without notice. Given recent events with the Virginia centered earthquake and hurricane Irene, no one is more keenly aware of this than residents, businesses and agencies residing and doing business along the US Eastern seaboard.  From the Capitol Region on up through New York and even points further north, the country experienced multiple emergency situations. We thank our Federal Agencies for their preparedness, poise and response. In grave situations such as these, it’s vital that Federal employees have a clear channel of communications with managers, coworkers and team members to navigate through the various challenges and emergencies that arise. One key way to achieve this is by tapping into their organization’s mobile deployment. Mobile connection ensures messaging continuity with uninterrupted communication and access to critical information (BC/COOP). Onset Technology is used by a considerable number of Federal Government Agencies. Those agencies depend on […] Read more »
