On January 1, 2013, all paging equipment (including pagers, transmitters etc) must move to a 12.5 KHz narrowband channel or to a technology that achieves equivalent efficiency.   Talk is Cheap The FCC has been talking about Narrow Banding for quite a while, since 1995 in fact, when the first narrow banding rules were adopted.  In 2004 the FCC announced the deadline of January 1, 2013 as the drop dead date for all Public Safety and Industrial/Business licensees to move their communications from the 25 kHz (wideband) radio frequency to the 12.5 kHz (narrowband) channel bandwidth or a technology that achieves equivalent efficiency. The Federal SERVE Act Could Rescue Volunteer Fire Fighters and Other First Responders

  Thousands of volunteers Firefighters and other first responders may finally be getting compensation for their selfless and heroic efforts. On July 11, 2011 New York Congressman Maurice Hinchey introduced the Supporting Emergency Responders Volunteer Efforts (SERVE) Act. According to New York’s WBNG News, “The SERVE Act would provide volunteer firefighters and emergency service personnel with a $1,000 annual tax credit. The brave volunteers who risk their own lives to save the lives of others deserve our support. In short, the SERVE Act says thank you.” Volunteers often incur personal expenses in order to be a part of their community’s first responder teams.
