A Tale of HIPAA Compliance

physician

How a physician’s request violated HIPAA Compliance Earlier this week we received an interesting request from one of our customers. The customer is a physician who faced the following issue in the OR: I am a physician who finds it inconvenient to constantly have to give the room circulator my pin number to see a page. Is there some workaround to this? HIPAA Compliant Smartphone We immediately realized that while this might be a pain point for this physician and many other doctors, we could not comply with the request as it would be a HIPAA violation. Hospitals and clinics comply with HIPAA by having all communication tools with patient information automatically lock after 15 minutes of inactivity. This requires users to log back in. It is understandable that logging back into the doctor’s smartphone after a period of inactivity can be an annoyance and even slow down workflow. However, […] Read more »

Seven reasons why we need pager alternatives in healthcare

devon with i suck pager

Pitch the pager or face the consequences While smartphones have become the manner of communication for most professionals, pagers are still used in many professions as the standard mode of communication. This choice for pagers comes with significant consequences and indeed many suggest the need for finding pager alternatives in healthcare. For example, pagers are not a secure method for communicating as pager messages are unencrypted. They leak information. Pager communications can also be hijacked. What is surprising is that while pagers have many significant reliability issues associated with them, many doctor and healthcare organizations continue to use them rather than seek a pager alternative. Stickiness While the overall popularity of pagers has been in decline over the past several years (see Google trends graph), pagers still maintain stickiness in the healthcare industry. In part this reason is historical as pagers have been used to alert doctors since the 1950s and […] Read more »

The industry has steadily grown over the past several years… as evidenced by the fact that three billion of those devices are consumer products. From smart utility meters and connected cars on the high end, to fitness trackers on the low end, IoT consumer devices are quickly becoming ubiquitous. But it doesn’t even scratch the surface of the growth that’s projected in the coming years. In December, my colleague Louis Basenese quoted some eye-popping forecasts… Tech research firm Gartner pegs the number of devices connected to the internet at 21 billion by 2020. Article Courtesy of:  Health IT Security The recent ransomware attack on Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center highlights the healthcare cybersecurity risks organizations face today. Unfortunately, this cyber attack also reveals the inadequacy of the HIPAA Security Rule to provide guidance on the numerous healthcare cybersecurity threats that are not associated with ePHI. The reasons why HIPAA is poorly suited for the risks posed by cyber threats fall into three categories. The first is that this regulatory approach is narrowly focused on the security of PHI and addresses only a part of the overall cyber threat. The second is that a rules-based risk management approach does not work to mitigate the full range of cyber threats and cannot help healthcare organizations increase resilience against […] Read more »

The question remains: Will this help or hurt providers’ efforts? Nowadays consumers/patients could track their daily steps, caloric consumption/expenditure and sleep patterns but what if they tracked every aspect of their health? Would it aid in creating thorough medical records or would it clog NHS’s electronic health records with useless data? The report examines consumer attitudes towards new technologies, including both present-day healthIT wearables and the advances, from body enhancement to human genetic modification, that lie in the near-future: 50% of US consumers favour digital devices that monitor “every aspect” of one’s physical health. Are You Prepared For Healthcare Ransomware? Article Courtesy of:  Hospital EMR & EHR – Written By Anne Zieger Earlier this month, a Texas hospital was hit with a particularly loathsome virus. Leaders at Mount Pleasant, Tx.-based Titus Regional Medical Center found out on January 15 that a “ransomware” virus had encrypted files on several of the medical center’s database servers, blocking access to EMR data as well as the ability to enter data into the system. In this kind of attack, the malware author demands a financial ransom to be paid for freeing up the data. TRMC didn’t disclose how much money the attacker(s) demanded, but it may have been an immense sum, because the hospital apparently thought that bringing in pricey security consultants and enduring several days of downtime was preferable to paying up. Although, they also probably realized the slippery slope of paying the ransom and also there’s no […] Read more »

Healthcare Security - Anthem Data Breach

Cyber security: Attack of the Health Hackers Targeting Medical Records Breach of Anthem database, probably from China, is part of a 2015 wave of 100m hacked medical records.  Eight out of ten of the biggest hacks in the US last year were of healthcare providers caused by failed healthcare security. Last January an administrator at health insurer Anthem noticed an unusually complex query running on the computer network. It looked like a colleague was responsible, but a quick check revealed that it was coming from somewhere else.  Minutes later, Anthem was in crisis mode. Investigators believe the hackers were from China and had been operating undetected inside the company’s network for months. They gained access by tricking the employee to click on a phishing email that was disguised to look like an internal message. Using the administrator’s credentials, hackers combed through Anthem’s database containing names, social security numbers and birth […] Read more »

Poor healthcare apps could cost hospitals $100 million a year

Article Courtesy of:  Healthcare IT News Poor healthcare apps could cost hospitals $100 million a year While top hospitals have built apps in-house, many are failing to win over more patients.   While 66 of the 100 largest hospitals in the United States offer consumers mobile health apps, only 2 percent of patients are using them, according to a new report published on Wednesday by Accenture that also found that failure to focus apps on services consumers want most could cost each hospital more than $100 million a year in lost revenue.  0 In its “Losing Patience: Why Healthcare Providers Need to Up Their Mobile Game” report, the consultancy found that 38 of those top U.S. hospitals have developed health apps in-house rather than by hiring a mobile app vendor. By not aligning their functions and user experience with what patients expect, many of these mobile health apps are failing […] Read more »

OnPage News: Still Using Old-School Pagers?

HIPAA Compliant Secure Messaging

Article Courtesy of:  Sioux City Journal Why do doctors still use pagers?   The first pager was patented in 1949 for New York City doctors to stay in contact with the hospital. Countless “paging doctor” messages later, emergency workers are about the only people left still using beepers on a regular basis. But maybe not for long. “I foresee within two years, we won’t be carrying pagers anymore,” said Brenda Gabel, senior telecommunications technician at Mercy Medical Center Sioux City, where 650 pagers were used as recently as 2008. “We’ll be carrying smart phones instead.” These are humbling times for the trusty pager once a status symbol and safety net in an era of answering machines and pay phones. Sales plummeted as cell phones became affordable, of course, and now it’s possible to buy a pager on eBay for next to nothing. But there were holdouts, mainly first responders […] Read more »

Best Practices For HIPAA Compliance & HIPAA Privacy Article Courtesy of:  Forbes Industries such as healthcare and financial services are special targets for data breaches and cyber criminals because, as bank robber Willie Sutton said, “that’s where the money is.” Every week, we read another story about cybersecurity breaches. The growing use of social media intensifies this risk, as users consider themselves part of a “tribe” and naively click on links from their “friends” and introduce malware into the organization. Or they inadvertently share personal information about patients or clients. Cybercriminals use also personal information shared on social media to trick users into giving up passwords, hacking accounts and worse. What can firms entrusted with client information do to protect client data as well as their own reputations?  As the discussion about privacy and security intensifies globally, I recently learned that the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was […] Read more »

Wearables take Security Concerns to a ‘different level’ Article Courtesy of:  Fierce Mobile Healthcare Consumer fitness devices and company-sponsored wellness programs that use them pose a “whole different level of security and privacy concern,” Stephen Cobb, senior security researcher at ESET, tells HealthcareInfoSecurity.com. “A lot of the data is fairly benign, but the architecture within which these devices operate–there are apps that talk to them, there is data that is transmitted and stored and some sort of portal though which you go and access your  information–it introduces multiple points where potentially sensitive, private information could be intercepted and stolen,” he says in the interview. Cobb says he’s not too concerned about data at rest on these devices or data shared through smartphones, but it becomes more vulnerable when it’s stored in the cloud or in a database. He cites the breach at toy maker Vetch as an example of a […] Read more »

Better ER Communication Article Excerpt Courtesy of: Fierce Healthcare & Ilene MacDonald It’s so easy to think you’ve communicated a message clearly. After all, you understand the instructions, so it only stands to reason that the person receiving them must also understand what you meant. And though most misunderstandings can be cleared up quickly in everyday situations, studies show that they pose a significant danger for patients when signals get crossed. In fact, an estimated 80 percent of the most serious medical errors in hospitals are linked to miscommunications. The collection of patient-reported data at a health system is often highly fragmented and a burden to patients, staff and physicians alike. It can lead to inaccurate data, low completion rates, missed diagnoses, and high cost. This exciting webinar will discuss how to improve and optimize patient data collection to dramatically increase patient engagement. Pager Service Disruption Worries Quebec’s Rural Communities

Emergency responder woman

Telus announced that it is canceling its pager service across Canada, effective March 31, 2015. This is cause for worry amongst some residents of Quebec’s rural communities according to CBC News. Several anglophone coastline villages near Labrador, on Quebec’s Lower North Shore, do not have cellphone service. They rely on pagers to reach health-care workers and emergency responders. Without a pager system, according to Rowsell Roberts, volunteer firefighters and health-care workers would have to wait by the phone at home. Another group recommend using two-way radios — a 1950’s technology attempting to cure 21st century urgent messaging needs. Pagers Are Obsolete Fewer and fewer people are using pagers – the devices you hold in your hand – as time goes on. The number of pagers in use has been plummeting each year since their height in the mid-1990s. Nonetheless, as of 2013, about 161,500 Canadians still had paging service subscriptions, according […] Read more »

Can Smartphones Can Help You Eat Better?

A smartphone is great for calculating your net worth, listening to music, and taking photos. But did you know that a smartphone is also great for helping you eat better? Well, that’s what 82 percent of respondents believe, according to a recent survey. That stat comes from food ethnographer June Jo Lee, who specializes in cultural analysis, and who also recently conducted a survey at a whole grains food conference in Boston. Smartphones have the ability to help increase food literacy – just by doing a Siri or Google search. Many social researchers believe it is also influencing not only what millennials think, but what they eat. The real question is, do they end up eating better and healthier or do they just think they are eating better and healthier. It’s hard to know for sure — because the data is all self-reported. One thing, however, is clear — access to […] Read more »

Ways Mobile Technology Can Enhance Nurse Communications

Nurses: The First Practitioners of mHealth Legions of caring nurses were probably the first practitioners of mobile health (mHealth), starting in the last century — the pre-smartphone era. Nurses often carried “beepers” or what is now considered antiquated pagers. Ways Mobile Technology Can Enhance Nurse Communications Today, there are many ways mobile technology can enhance nurse communications. New mobile technologies are poised to empower nurses to both spend more time with patients and improve the quality of their care. Many believe this will make nurses more efficient, lead to lower fatigue, and result in fewer overtime hours — saving hospitals money. Mobile technologies, which include sensors, devices, and apps will make it easier for nurses to access information from wherever they are and collaborate with a patient’s care team. Accenture research found that nurses frequently use a diverse range of communication technologies. These include: bed alarms, digital signage, both mobile […] Read more »

Pager Inefficiencies | OnPage Pager Replacement

The OnPage Pager Replacement is the Answer to poor Hospital Communications. According to a recent study by Dr. Larry Ponemon, of the Ponemon Institute, “…the efficient communication and collaboration among physicians, nurses and other providers is critical to the coordination and delivery of patient care, especially given the increasingly mobile nature of today’s clinicians…” The health care industry continues to rely, for the most part, on Pagers — an antiquated technology. Pagers create inefficiencies that have a significant economic and productivity impact on the health care industry — costing billions. Dr. Ponemon details these inefficiencie in his “Report on the Economic Impact of Inefficient Communications in Healthcare”. These are the four main points : The average care provider wastes more than 45 minutes per day by using outdated communication technologies – that’s almost 6 hours a week. 65% of the time it takes to admit a patient is wasted due […] Read more »

stackedphones

Due to the new HIPAA compliance guidelines that came out in September, more organizations rush to get compliant messaging solutions such as secure SMS. However, there are many reasons why secured texting is NOT acceptable for healthcare communication and is NOT a suitable replacement for pagers. 1) Secured Texting does NOT enable messages to be sent through multiple platforms; messages can only be sent through the application 2) Secured Texting does NOT provide persistent alerts until the message is acknowledged; it will only alert you once. 3) Secured Texting does NOT offer a repeated delivery until your device is operational 4) Secured Texting does NOT have a time stamped audit trial for ALL messages 5) Secured Texting does NOT allow for group or escalation group messages. 6) Secured Texting IS NOT fully HIPAA compliant. It does not archive messages. If you are using secured texting as your messaging solution, you […] Read more »

In the healthcare industry, a patient’s privacy and security are held to the highest standard. Healthcare professionals and organizations must adhere to many rules & guidelines including the HIPAA Security Role, HITECH act and the Joint Commission.  Breaching these deep regulations can result in expensive fines and lack of patient confidentiality. Nevertheless, these breaches do occur more frequently than to be expected. One way these occur is due to nosy employees. In October of this year, Allina Health system in Minnesota notified more than 3,800 patients that one of its medical assistants had accessed their PHI improperly for more than three years. In this time frame she had accessed, patient’s names, DOB’s, clinical data, health insurance information and partial Social Security Numbers. They were able to seek out who was responsible for these breaches by following the audit trail of that patient’s record. Another way in which privacy & security breaches occur is due […] Read more »
