7 steps to creating an actionable IT on-call schedule

How to make sure IT on-call works for you I spent a bit of time on Reddit the other day and thought it interesting just how many posts were focused on IT on-call and on-call scheduling. Some posts were rants on horrible customers – who hasn’t had some of those? Some actually wrote about positive interactions from being on-call – those were rare posts. But many engineers in DevOps and IT posted on their trepidation about being on-call. They wondered: What is the best way for my team to create an IT on-call schedule? How do I ensure I wake up if I am alerted? Should my growing on-call team use an on-call cell phone and hand it off between rotations? How do I manage being on-call and then having to show up at 8 a.m. the next morning? Is it reasonable to expect on-call duty 24/7? The answers to […] Read more »

OnPage Shows Off its ConnectWise integration at IT Nation 2016

How does OnPage connect wisely with ConnectWise? A question many asked us at IT Nation 2016 in Orlando last week was ‘How do you connect with ConnectWise?’ The simple answer is, through a direct API. ConnectWise’s robust ticketing system sends a message when a ticket is created. OnPage turns that message into a loud and audible alert. Many MSPs use RMMs like LabTech to monitor multiple endpoints. When an issue arises such as a downed server or a potential malware infection or one of many other incidents, the RMM sends an alert to ConnectWise. ConnectWise in turn creates a ticket and based on the alerting profile set by the user – such as alert me when the coffee pot is empty or there is a serious client issue –  sends a callback to OnPage. OnPage integration enables your MSP to shine By integrating with OnPage, your ConnectWise system now enables automatic priority alerts based upon ticket […] Read more »

Critical Alerting Is the New Black

WHY CRITICAL ALERTING IS A MUST HAVE FOR INCIDENT RESPONSE TO BE EFFECTIVE At OnPage, we spend lots of time thinking about how to apprise people about the importance of critical IT alerting. So when our CEO Judit Sharon emailed me about an upcoming webinar from HIMSS entitled: Incident Response is the New Black – A Must Have For Your Security Strategy, I was intrigued. I wanted to know how the speaker would entertain alerting in incident response. As it turned out, while the webinar was fascinating, the discussion focused on response dictionaries and procedures and did not mention critical alerting at all. I was left wondering, why would an organization focus solely on incident response to save their IT? How can an organization have an effective incident response platform without a critical alerting platform? In the vein of fashion, wouldn’t the scenario be like having pants but forgetting to button […] Read more »

When tools are out of control you need critical alerting

critical alerting

Tools going Rogue – a story for Halloween We have all heard stories of DevOps woe. Some tales are sad. Some tales describe true misfortune. And some tales just leave you thinking what the heck were developers thinking? This story is a tale of the later. This story will tell the tale of how some developers at a start-up in New England created code which was supposed to live and work on AWS EC2 servers. However, the developers never thought to test what they were spinning up or to put critical alerting in place for when things went wrong.  And that is where our tale of woe begins. Tale number 1: Automation destroyed the world What the tool was supposed to do has long since been forgotten but the horror and nightmares it caused will not go away so soon. At the start-up I am referring to here, every protocol […] Read more »

Serverless promises and the persistent need for critical alerting

critical alerting and serverless computing

Why serverless computing doesn’t end the need for security or alerts Serverless computing provides the advantage of taking away the problem of managing servers. For many small start-ups, this is a huge advantage as the cost of purchasing, maintaining and scaling servers is a real pain point. Serverless also holds forth the prospect of ending the need for Ops as we know it, ending the need for security worries and ending the need for being on-call. But, while this modern-day DevOps marvel known as serverless might seem like a panacea, serverless computing needs to come with a healthy dose of reality. The reality of serverless In an article I recently posted to DZone entitled How Smart Is Serverless, I question how smart it is to outsource your security concerns to a third party like AWS. As I note in the article, you cannot abstract security without facing some pretty scary consequences. Amichai […] Read more »

NoOps and the Need for Critical Alerting

critical alerting with serverless

NoOps eschews critical alerting at its own peril Many start-ups’ embrace serverless architectures such as AWS, believing they will be able to adopt NoOps. NoOps means no worries about servers as everything is on the cloud and if there are no worries about servers then there is no need to worry about critical alerting. The reality is slightly different. No matter how minimized Ops becomes, there will always be a need for strong incident management applications. The emphasis will simply further push monitoring from an Ops-only role to an important role for everyone on the development team. What is NoOps and why is there so much criticism? NoOps defines an IT environment that is so automated and abstracted from the underlying infrastructure that there is no need for a dedicated team to manage Ops in-house. The two main drivers behind NoOps are increasing IT automation and cloud computing. Even among […] Read more »

OnPage Priority Messaging

HEALTHCARE-ONPAGE

OnPage Secure, Priority Messaging An Interview with Judit Sharon, OnPage CEO A secure, prioritized messaging solution that eliminates the need to carry a traditional pager. It is the middle of the night and the ER of a large hospital in Pennsylvania is witnessing record activity. A patient, in need of critical cardiac care, lies amid bustling nurses staring into the thunderstorm ripping through the city. Acting quickly, the hospital pages its senior cardiac surgeon who is engrossed in another task on a different floor. Regrettably, there is a sudden loss of coverage and the message is lost. Fortunately, the hospital had enough resources to avoid any grim consequence—but these situations can quickly go south, more often than not. What can be done to avoid such ‘close call’ scenarios altogether? Getting rid of pagers and embracing smartphones driven instant communication. “Real-time communication that is reliable is vital to healthcare,” states Judit […] Read more »

Poor healthcare apps could cost hospitals $100 million a year

Article Courtesy of:  Healthcare IT News Poor healthcare apps could cost hospitals $100 million a year While top hospitals have built apps in-house, many are failing to win over more patients.   While 66 of the 100 largest hospitals in the United States offer consumers mobile health apps, only 2 percent of patients are using them, according to a new report published on Wednesday by Accenture that also found that failure to focus apps on services consumers want most could cost each hospital more than $100 million a year in lost revenue.  0 In its “Losing Patience: Why Healthcare Providers Need to Up Their Mobile Game” report, the consultancy found that 38 of those top U.S. hospitals have developed health apps in-house rather than by hiring a mobile app vendor. By not aligning their functions and user experience with what patients expect, many of these mobile health apps are failing […] Read more »

How Teamwork, Trust & Improved Communication Reduce Mistakes in the Emergency Room

Emergency Room

Better ER Communication Article Excerpt Courtesy of: Fierce Healthcare & Ilene MacDonald It’s so easy to think you’ve communicated a message clearly. After all, you understand the instructions, so it only stands to reason that the person receiving them must also understand what you meant. And though most misunderstandings can be cleared up quickly in everyday situations, studies show that they pose a significant danger for patients when signals get crossed. In fact, an estimated 80 percent of the most serious medical errors in hospitals are linked to miscommunications. The collection of patient-reported data at a health system is often highly fragmented and a burden to patients, staff and physicians alike. It can lead to inaccurate data, low completion rates, missed diagnoses, and high cost. This exciting webinar will discuss how to improve and optimize patient data collection to dramatically increase patient engagement. To combat miscommunication in the emergency room, one […] Read more »

Volunteer firefighting is a tradition in this Mayer, Minnesota family. Combined, the family has served over 100 years putting out fires, protecting property, and saving lives. Rod Maetzold (Dad), is Mayer’s fire chief. The three sons — Jon, Andy, and Adam have been volunteering since they turned 18. Together, at one point, the family made up almost a third of the entire small town fire department. They sometimes joked around and called the firehouse the Maetzold Fire Department. Can Smartphones Can Help You Eat Better?

healthy foods

A smartphone is great for calculating your net worth, listening to music, and taking photos. But did you know that a smartphone is also great for helping you eat better? Well, that’s what 82 percent of respondents believe, according to a recent survey. That stat comes from food ethnographer June Jo Lee, who specializes in cultural analysis, and who also recently conducted a survey at a whole grains food conference in Boston. Smartphones have the ability to help increase food literacy – just by doing a Siri or Google search. Many social researchers believe it is also influencing not only what millennials think, but what they eat. The real question is, do they end up eating better and healthier or do they just think they are eating better and healthier. It’s hard to know for sure — because the data is all self-reported. One thing, however, is clear — access to […] Read more »

How Smartphones and Digital Screens Transform Minds

Baby reading a tablet

Are You Hard-Wired? Neuroscientists warn that people who use smartphones and digital devices for reading seem to be developing “digital brains”. These online readers are developing new circuits designed for skimming through a flood of information online and skipping around through hyperlinked pages. This new alternative way of reading appears to be at odds with the traditional linear print reading circuitry developed over the past several thousands of years — from the birth of Egyptian hieroglyphics to the emergence of the Gutenberg press. Many believe that online reading is not only transforming how we read, but our minds as well. Online readers skim, pick out key words, and organizing their eye movements to generate the most information at the highest speed. And, they do this at a rate too fast to ingest real meaning. The question is, “Are we developing Twitter brains?” If cable TV news gave the world the sound […] Read more »

What to Expect: Health Care & The Internet Of Things – IoT

OnPage - Internet of Things

Health Care & the Internet of Things – IoT. What’s next? Many believe that the “Internet or Things” or IoT is just on the cusp of exploding in our homes – garage-door openers that open when your car is nearby, refrigerators that use the Internet to place an order when the milk gets low, heating systems that turn on from our smartphone, etc. But what about healthcare & the Internet of Things? Will we soon be seeing “smart” beds that react to patients needs and free up nurses to take care of more urgent needs? Will your runaway glucose level be reported to your doctor’s smartphone via a secure messaging alert? Or maybe it’s something else we haven’t even imagined yet? Predicting the health care technology future, even 3-5 years down the road, is a difficult task. Dr. Carl Sagan,  once said, “Prognosticating about the future is lost art.” Perhaps 150 years ago […] Read more »

Internet of Things – Separating the Critical Data

Internet of Things

There’s been a lot of hype about the Internet of Things – but what exactly is the “Internet of Things”, and how will the use and access of critical data affect your life?   The Internet of Things is simply the interconnection of computing devices that are connected to one another and to the Internet. With applications ranging from consumer to consumer, business to business, and government to industries. The abbreviation for it looks like this — IoT.So, what type of devices and applications are we referring to here? Well, hi-tech ones that you might find in a health care setting such as a heart monitoring implant, internet-linked billboards, waste management systems to monitor those who exceed waste limits, smart water systems and meters, wearable devices such as wristwatches that not only monitor time and manage texts and emails, but they also monitor the blood sugar in a person’s system. Pagers Cost Hospitals $1.75 Million in Inefficient Communications

Inefficient communications during critical clinical workflows such as patient admissions, emergency response team coordination, and patient transfers costs the average U.S. hospital about $1.75 million annually, according to a new report from the Ponemon Institute. The report finds that: A significant amount of time is wasted during these workflows due to the inefficiency of pagers and the lack of adoption of secure text messaging. The use of secure text messaging could reclaim more than half of this wasted time. The Ponemon study highlight the pressing need to overcome inefficient communications  with more effective communications solutions for efficient communication and collaboration amongst providers is critical to the coordination and delivery of patient and allow patients to more quickly receive the care they require. Pager Inefficiencies | OnPage Pager Replacement

Hand Held Pager

The OnPage Pager Replacement is the Answer to poor Hospital Communications. According to a recent study by Dr. Larry Ponemon, of the Ponemon Institute, “…the efficient communication and collaboration among physicians, nurses and other providers is critical to the coordination and delivery of patient care, especially given the increasingly mobile nature of today’s clinicians…” The health care industry continues to rely, for the most part, on Pagers — an antiquated technology. Pagers create inefficiencies that have a significant economic and productivity impact on the health care industry — costing billions. Remembering Pagers or “How to Say I Love You in Three 3’s”

Priority Messaging Healthcare - OnPage - Smartphone Pager Replacement

When Pagers Were King. A couple of decades ago, in its heyday, pagers were unquestionably “The Next Big Thing” – a sleek, hi-tech, futuristic communication device. If you really needed to get in touch – send a page! The buzzing-vibrating sound was sure to get the attention of whoever you sent the page, and they would certainly respond. We’ll, that was the idea, but it really didn’t play out that way. Here’s why: First: You really never knew if they got the page, which is kind of a drag if the page was important. You could always ask them if they got the page tomorrow –  if […] Read more »
