How Smartphones and Digital Screens Transform Minds

Baby reading a tablet

Are You Hard-Wired? Neuroscientists warn that people who use smartphones and digital devices for reading seem to be developing “digital brains”. These online readers are developing new circuits designed for skimming through a flood of information online and skipping around through hyperlinked pages. This new alternative way of reading appears to be at odds with the traditional linear print reading circuitry developed over the past several thousands of years — from the birth of Egyptian hieroglyphics to the emergence of the Gutenberg press. Many believe that online reading is not only transforming how we read, but our minds as well. Online readers skim, pick out key words, and organizing their eye movements to generate the most information at the highest speed. And, they do this at a rate too fast to ingest real meaning. The question is, “Are we developing Twitter brains?” If cable TV news gave the world the sound […] Read more »

Email & SMS: NOT Good Enough For IT Monitoring

networkmonitoring

Are you an IT Administrator staring at your phone’s screen all day waiting for an email or text?  Have you ever missed a CRITICAL email or text because it didn’t grab your attention? Missing even one single email or text can result in downtime which can also result in revenue loss, reputation damage, and potential customer defections. System monitoring without a noticeable alert is like getting a Pizza delivered to your building but not knowing when, so unless you sit there by the lobby waiting for that Pizza, by the time you find the Pizza it’s stale and cold. OnPage helps to eliminate this process so that you can receive your […] Read more »

Why SMS is NOT Suitable For Doctors

SMS

Text messaging over the last decade has become a mainstream form of communication, but does that mean that it is appropriate to be used among doctors? The critical messages sent among doctors are different than communications in any other industry. They often contain private and time sensitive information regarding patients; therefore, doctors are required to be in accordance with HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Text messaging is NOT HIPAA compliant and therefore texting and doctors simply do not mix. Failure to comply with HIPAA could result in fines of up to $250,000 or ten years in jail. OnPage provides a simple priority messaging solution that fully complies with HIPAA standards to ensure your messages are encrypted, immediate, and auditable. Text Messaging for Physicians Deemed “Unacceptable” by JCAHO

Text Messaging is not HIPAA Compliant

Since the early 2000s, text messaging has been a mainstream communication.  Primarily used for its ease of convenience and efficiency, text messaging has branched out from being a personal form of communication to an enterprise wide form of communication.  Lately for businesses, the use of text messaging has come under scrutiny due to policies and regulations that it does not adhere to. The healthcare industry is currently aware of this scrutiny as it has been brought up by JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.) JCAHO recently weighed in on the issue of physician and licensed independent practitioners using text messages to transmit orders for patients, hospitals or any other healthcare setting.  JCAHO stated that the use of text messaging in healthcare environments is unacceptable due to its violations of the HIPAA Security and Privacy regulations that every healthcare professional is expected to adhere to. These strict HIPAA guidelines include […] Read more »

Local Hospitals & Public Safety Feeling the Squeeze of FCC Narrow Banding Mandate

http://www.dreamstime.com/-image15995407

On January 1, 2013, all paging equipment (including pagers, transmitters etc) must move to a 12.5 KHz narrowband channel or to a technology that achieves equivalent efficiency.   Talk is Cheap The FCC has been talking about Narrow Banding for quite a while, since 1995 in fact, when the first narrow banding rules were adopted.  In 2004 the FCC announced the deadline of January 1, 2013 as the drop dead date for all Public Safety and Industrial/Business licensees to move their communications from the 25 kHz (wideband) radio frequency to the 12.5 kHz (narrowband) channel bandwidth or a technology that achieves equivalent efficiency. With the January 1, 2013 deadline fast approaching many organizations are in a tail spin over finding funds and/or new technology to comply with the Mandate, especially those who chose to delay system updates.  Public Safety, businesses, and hospitals are especially feeling the pressure. Many are scrambling […] Read more »

The Federal SERVE Act Could Rescue Volunteer Fire Fighters and Other First Responders

First Responders

Thousands of volunteers Firefighters and other first responders may finally be getting compensation for their selfless and heroic efforts. On July 11, 2011 New York Congressman Maurice Hinchey introduced the Supporting Emergency Responders Volunteer Efforts (SERVE) Act. According to New York’s WBNG News, “The SERVE Act would provide volunteer firefighters and emergency service personnel with a $1,000 annual tax credit. The brave volunteers who risk their own lives to save the lives of others deserve our support. In short, the SERVE Act says thank you.” Volunteers often incur personal expenses in order to be a part of their community’s first responder teams. It’s not uncommon that they pay for their own pager service and pager hardware to be ‘on call’ when disaster strikes.  As Fire Chief Bob Franklin of Arkansas Northeast Saline County Volunteer Fire and Rescue told Today’s KTHV “They are there in a minute’s notice. Everyone wears […] Read more »

Pitch Your Pager Device for a Smartphone

Pitch Your Pager

Do you still use a pager? If you answered yes, you’re not alone.  Many hospital, healthcare and emergency response workers still own and use pagers as part of their daily operations. Pagers widespread but falling out of favor Hospitals routinely use pagers to alert physicians, respiratory therapists, and other important staff regarding when and where they’re needed in the hospital. Firefighters too, especially volunteer staff, regularly employ pagers to receive priority messages so they can respond to calls in their local communities. Although still widespread, not every one is happy about still having to use pagers. Many users often cite serious concerns such as limited functionality, poor coverage, aging infrastructure and a dwindling number of options when it comes to pager service providers.  They feel trapped into using obsolete pager technology when their own personal devices offer far superior service. Smartphones begin replacing pagers The need for priority messaging […] Read more »

Paging Customer Service. Hello? Hello?

Hand Held Pager

It’s tough being a pager customer today. Once admired by those around them as well-connected leaders of instant communication, pager users now experience reduced or inadequate pager coverage, suffer the frustration of poor customer service, and must endure the harsh jokes about dated technology. Although we can’t do anything about the bad jokes, we can address the issues of reliable coverage, responsible customer service, and new pager technology. Let’s start by admitting one key fact that most pager companies have forgotten. Priority messaging is as critical to business today as it was 20 years ago. Sure the tools are changing but priority messaging remains a critical part of many businesses and organizations. Pager Coverage Pager customers consider coverage a big, and I do mean huge concern. It’s a main reason they have a pager in the first place. They rely on being accessible and run the risk of losing customers […] Read more »

OnPage™ Adds Redundancy and Reliability to Our Own Private Cloud

Cloud Computing

We’ve been hearing a lot about ‘the cloud’ lately. Maybe you have too. It’s a new way of harnessing the power and scalability of large computing resources and it is becoming a more integrated and efficient way of ensuring highly dependable, redundant, and secure software as a service (SAAS) performance. Steve Jobs at Apple’s recent WWDC2011 talked a lot about his cloud; how it will make everyone’s life easier because “it just works”.  As an SAAS smartphone priority messaging and pager application, we agree. We’re all about ‘making it work’ for our customers. That’s why having a private, secure cloud architecture has been part of our plan from the start. The exciting news is that the scheduled completion of our private, secure, and redundant cloud computing infrastructure is finally here.  On June 19th and again on 29th, our technical team was busy upgrading, testing, and enhancing our software, […] Read more »
